According to Chrysochoidis, Greece has made proposals to EU countries for a joint fight against illegal immigration, including strengthening border protection and a number of other police measures. As the minister emphasized, the costs of protecting the EU's external borders should be shared among EU member states. “In this regard, Turkey, which is the main ‘transit point’ on the route of illegal immigrants to Europe, needs special assistance,” added Michalis Chrysochoidis.
Greece is among the EU countries that suffer more than others from illegal migration. Every year, thousands of migrants try to reach the shores of Greece on fishing boats, inflatable boats, and even by swimming, through the narrow straits separating the Greek islands from the Turkish coast. In the last month alone, three major shipwrecks of vessels carrying illegal immigrants occurred in Greece's territorial waters near the islands of Chios, Kerkyra, and Euboea. More than 10 people died, several dozen went missing, and more than 200 passengers managed to survive.
