German Chancellor Angela Merkel is not against taking selfies with refugees
As reported by "Russkaya Germaniya", in 2018 there were 20.8 million such people. At the same time, this is the smallest increase since 2011, the office notes. "Migrant background" refers to cases where the person themselves or at least one of their parents had a different citizenship at the time of birth.
Of these 21 million people, more than half (11.1 million people, 52%) have German citizenship, the remaining 48% have passports of other states. The vast majority of official foreigners in Germany are essentially immigrants (85%), ethnic Germans among them account for 46%.
More than half of the mentioned 11.1 million German citizens have held a German passport since birth (51%). Just over 2.5 million people became Germans through the naturalization procedure, 23% through the resettlement of Germans, and about another 1% as a result of adoption.
Almost two-thirds of all residents with a migrant background moved to Germany from another European country – 13.8 million people. Of these, 7.5 million come from other EU member states. Just over 4.5 million (22%) people came from Asia, about 1 million (5%) from Africa. Another about 600 thousand (3%) people come from North, Central, and South America, as well as Australia.
The office separately notes the three most important countries for German immigration: Turkey (13% of the population with a migrant background), Poland (11%), and Russia (7%).
