The share of potential emigrants varies significantly from country to country. As Washington ProFile notes, the most are in Africa. The strongest 'packing moods' are in Sierra Leone, where 65% of respondents are ready to move abroad. More than half of the residents of Guyana (60%), Congo (59%), Ghana, Liberia and Nigeria (58% each), Zimbabwe (57%), Dominican Republic (56%), Senegal (55%), Uganda, Malawi and El Salvador (51% each) are ready to make such a decision at any moment.
At the other pole is Saudi Arabia, which only 1% of respondents would want to leave. There are very few potential emigrants in Australia, South Africa and Thailand (8% each), Indonesia, India and Laos (9% each). Interestingly, some of these states (for example, Laos) are among the poorest countries in the world.
For the surveyed post-Soviet states, the situation is as follows. From Moldova, 34% of residents surveyed are ready to leave, from Azerbaijan - 28%, from Georgia - 26%, from Ukraine - 25%, from Armenia - 23%, from Lithuania - 22%, from Kyrgyzstan, Belarus and Estonia - 20% each, from Latvia - 19%, from Russia - 17%, from Kazakhstan - 13%, from Tajikistan - 12%.
For comparison, currently 30% of potential emigrants live in Iran, 27% each in the UK and Germany, 20% in Israel, 18% in France, 12% in Japan.
It is traditionally believed that most often young people interested in improving their standard of living move abroad. The Gallup poll confirmed the accuracy of this observation, but added that the possibility of emigration is more often discussed by people who already have relatives abroad.
