The Future of Online Gaming Business in Russia
As early as July 1, 2009, any activity related to organizing gambling on the territory of the Russian Federation will be prohibited. This is stated by law No. 224-F3<\/a> of November 29, 2006.<\/strong><\/p>\n
The effect of this law will be most noticeable on traditional casinos and gaming clubs. The closure of these establishments will deprive the Russian treasury of $2 billion in tax revenue. Moreover, about 350,000 people employed in the Russian gaming industry will lose their jobs, which will only add to the negative economic indicators in the context of the economic crisis.<\/p>\n
The saving loophole – reorganizing casinos into poker clubs – does not seem to work, since in addition to organizational difficulties (a certain accounting procedure, certification from the Russian Sports Poker Federation), there are issues with the rejection of poker as a sport by authorities in various regions. In Moscow, for example, only 16 poker clubs are allowed to open.<\/p>\n
What about online gaming? According to Article 5, Paragraph 3 of Law No. 224-F3, «Activities for organizing and conducting gambling using information and telecommunication networks, including the Internet, as well as communication means, including mobile communications, are prohibited.»<\/p>\n
