According to the British Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), one in twelve citizens of the United Kingdom lives outside the UK. Moreover, according to IPPR, another million people plan to leave the country in the next five years. The reasons why Britons leave their homeland are still poorly understood. However, those leaving are mainly older people who are already retiring, while young people, as a rule, stay to work.
At the same time, the number of immigrants arriving in the UK each year has reached a record figure: over the past year, for the first time in history, it amounted to 510,000 people. However, the statistics do not include arrivals from the EU, primarily from Eastern European countries, who come to the UK for work. Most immigrants come from Commonwealth countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
In total, since the Labour Party came to power in 1997, having proclaimed an 'open door' policy, 4 million immigrants have entered the UK, while only 1.6 million have left. During the same period, 1.8 million Britons left the country. // Lenta.ru
