About a thousand Somalis and Iraqis receive asylum in EU countries every month
Germany became the leader in granting asylum, with 2.2 thousand out of 8 thousand applications approved. The most rejections were in France: 7.8 thousand out of 9 thousand total applications. The only EU countries that refused to accept refugees were Lithuania and Estonia.
The most grounds for obtaining asylum were found among residents of Somalia, where a civil war has been raging for almost 20 years. In the first quarter of this year, 62% of 4 thousand Somali applications were approved. About half of the citizens of this country found shelter in Sweden, a quarter in the Netherlands.
Every second applicant from Iraq also received the right to protection from the EU, amounting to more than 2 thousand people. 65% of the total number of Iraqi refugees will be supported by German taxpayers.
The most rejected applications were from Russian citizens: out of 3 thousand Russians, 87% were denied asylum.
Sweden, which is a leader among EU countries in the number of refugees per capita, seeks to simplify the asylum procedure throughout the European Union. EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström, delegated by the Swedish government, accuses Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Austria of "tacit sabotage" of common immigration rules being developed by the European Commission.
At the same time, a number of European countries openly advocate for maintaining a strict system at the national level. "The current rules are the main tool for combating the widespread trade in refugee status, as well as against the services of illegal intermediaries," emphasizes Irish Minister of Justice Dermot Ahern.
