German Interior Minister threatens refugees with sanctions for refusing integration
If migrants "refuse to learn German, reject job offers, then after three years they will not be able to obtain the right to permanent residency," the head of the department emphasized. In his opinion, it is necessary to establish a direct link between "successful completion of integration" and the period during which migrants will be allowed to stay in the country.
The relevant law on this matter is already being developed, de Maizière emphasized. It is to be submitted for consideration in May.
The Interior Minister also believes that state regulation of refugees' place of residence will help prevent the formation of ghettos. Applicants for asylum, whose status is legally established, must be in places prescribed for them by the state, and not where they themselves "consider appropriate." At least until they find a job "that can provide them with a means of subsistence," the minister emphasized. Otherwise, they will be deprived of social benefits, de Maizière warned.
