First, traveling by bus is always significantly cheaper than, for example, flying. Second, it requires far less independence - both linguistic and topographical. So if any of the above is significant for you, delve together into the intricacies of bus travel.
The history of bus tourism popularity began back in the seventies. They say the 'pioneers' of European roads were young Britons who appreciated the opportunity to see several continental European countries in one trip in a dynamic mode, and for little money. Our domestic bus travelers actively went to Europe about twenty years later. Again, the main trump cards at that time were cheapness, speed, and also the opportunity to buy scarce goods abroad in large quantities: after all, a bus is not a plane, you don't need to pay for excess weight, and transporting luggage from country to country is much easier. Today the shopping component is becoming a thing of the past, although for those who like to 'pick up bargains' abroad its advantages are still relevant.
Geography of destinations
The geography of bus destinations covers almost all European countries - Scandinavia (Finland, Sweden, Norway), Southern Europe (Italy, Portugal, Spain, Croatia, Bulgaria), Benelux, France, Germany, Great Britain; there are interesting programs for the Alpine and Balkan countries. But wherever the route runs, it is important to decide from the very beginning which program you need: a sprint through the main points on the map or a shorter route, but with a relatively thoughtful examination of each country or city.
However, a bus tour is not necessarily a 'gallop' and not necessarily 'around Europe'. There are also tours with a flight to a single country (most often Italy or France) and a bus trip already within its borders. In addition, last winter, for example, a completely new tour to Jordan was opened along the route Akoba - Amman - Petra. What to choose is a matter of taste; but specialists advise beginners to book more 'colorful' tours to get a general idea of different countries, and then next time devote themselves to the one they liked most.
Seasons and prices
According to experts, the high season for bus travel is from April to October, and the highest spikes in demand occur during the May holidays and July-August - the traditional time for vacations and holidays. And if on average during the season the price of a weekly trip varies from €200 (Poland, Czech Republic) to €900 (Great Britain, long trans-European routes), then on 'peak dates' it can increase by 25% or more.
In general, it is impossible to determine the optimal time of year for bus tours overall. If, for example, July in France or Scandinavia is a bit hot, but quite bearable in a modern air-conditioned bus, then, for example, a trip to Jordan at the same time can become a real torture for a compatriot not too accustomed to Middle Eastern heat. Experienced bus tourists try to travel in May-June or September: optimal both in terms of weather and money.
Little tricks
Advanced tour operators do not skimp on various innovations and means of attracting customers. For example, the online booking system of some companies allows you to choose a specific seat on the bus in advance. A considerable plus. Let us hint: the best seats are on the right behind the guide's seat; good visibility and less motion sickness. But the seats at the beginning of the left row are a lottery. If there is a high partition behind the driver, it will almost completely block the view, but if not, then riding on that side of the aisle will be no worse than on the right.
It is not recommended to sit next to the second exit - there is often a draft. Also undesirable 'neighbors' are the bio-toilet (although for its main purpose it is used only in the most extreme cases) and the mini-kitchen - eternal sources of smells and crowding of fellow travelers. Seats in the rear of the cabin are the most shaky and noisy. However, the five-seat rear sofa is usually sold as two seats, which means sleeping here will be more spacious. As for bus brands, all other things being equal, preference should be given to 'Neoplan', 'Mercedes' or 'Bova'.
Another trump card is the complete absence of night transfers. For tour operators, this is a kind of stumbling block. On the one hand, if you do not lose nights for stops in hotels, you can manage to see and travel more. On the other hand, very, very few people manage to get enough sleep on the bus. This means that perception dulls with each 'moving' night, and the abundance of sights increasingly merges into a monotonous sleepy flow day after day.
Comfortable movement on the bus requires some individual preparation. For example, it is very important to choose clothes correctly: on the back surface and in the crotch of the trousers there should be no ridges and sharply protruding seams, since when sitting for a long time they compress blood vessels, causing legs and other parts of the body to go numb. Therefore, even such practical clothing as jeans is not very suitable for bus transfers. Completely 'home' pants are also not an option: you won't go on an excursion straight from the bus in them. Shoes must also meet certain requirements: comfortable, roomy, breathable, easily removable and without high heels. Experienced tourists do not recommend drinking a lot during transfers, but only quench thirst with small sips of mineral water or cold tea.
There is one more important component of the trip - obtaining a visa. Of course, if your passport is plastered with Schengen visas and you have not violated foreign laws, then there will be no problems. However, applicants with clean international passports going on an inexpensive bus tour always attract increased attention from consular services. Experienced managers even persuade clients with potentially problematic documents to take a slightly more expensive tour - just in case.
In conclusion
