According to the official, tens of thousands of people wishing to obtain Australian citizenship are studying cooking, accounting, and hairdressing in various courses precisely because these professions are on the list of 106 in-demand occupations. At the same time, Evans clarified, the country's economy needs completely different specialists, of high qualification.
In November 2009, the Australian Medical Association announced a reward of three thousand dollars to anyone who can 'entice' at least one qualified foreign doctor to move to the country and work there for at least 12 months. A representative of the association called the decision revolutionary and noted that urgent measures are needed to reduce the doctor shortage. Currently, Australia needs 500 qualified doctors willing to work in remote areas of the country.
The intermediary's reward will be paid from the association's funds. As Professor Gary Gilhooud told the publication, if the innovation proves effective, the $1.5 million needed for its implementation will be a small price to pay for reducing the doctor shortage.
Gilhooud also said that the shortage of doctors is most acute in the western states. According to Lenta.ru, many localities and even small towns currently have no doctor at all. At the same time, the professor noted that the selection of candidates will be strict and they must fully meet professional requirements.
