Domes of ancient Sergiyev Posad
Sergiyev Posad itself is a very ancient city, founded in 1345. Its distinctive landmark is the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, a truly unique monastery. No one has ever been able to destroy it – wars and battles raged, but it stood. During the invasion of the Russian land by the Poles, lawlessness and anarchy reigned. Dozens of cities were burned and looted. These were the fiercest battles for the liberation of the Russian land. Everything around was destroyed, but Posad held out and survived.
At one time, the residence of Alexei Romanov was located here. This is a beautiful palace with masterpieces of Russian painting, and beautiful sculptures adorn the halls and gardens near the palace. A beautiful view of the city, adorned with the domes of Posad.
The Trinity-Sergius Lavra was built over more than one century. Masters worked on it from the 15th to the 19th centuries. It is not a single structure but a whole ensemble of buildings, among which you can find true masterpieces of Russian architecture. And Sergiyev Posad is known for its pious people.
In the Lavra you can see icons by the great Russian masters Andrei Rublev and Daniil Cherny. The painting of these iconographers became a hallmark of Orthodoxy in the country. They managed to create true masterpieces that immortalized both of them.
In Sergiyev Posad you can find places where the relics of holy people are buried. Here are buried Archbishop Serapion, Metropolitan Joseph, Dionysius of Radonezh, and many other Orthodox figures.
