Of course, these figures are unevenly distributed across the globe. The highest tourism growth rates were recorded in Asia – 7%, followed by African countries (6%), in particular, the tourism industry in North African countries stabilized after the political events two years ago. But despite the optimistic signals of 2012, particularly in Tunisia and Egypt, this year North African countries will face an outflow of tourists.
Europe remains the most attractive region for tourists in the world. Given the economic situation in the European Union, international tourism nevertheless increased its indicators by 3%. 'Such a positive trend poses new challenges for politicians and tourism industry employees,' says Dr. Michael Frenzel, president of the Federal Association of the Tourism Industry.
The title of world champions in tourism remains firmly in German hands. Only every third German spends their vacation at home. All others pack their bags and go, some to distant lands, but most often to nearby places. In 2012, tourists from Germany spent 64 billion euros abroad, which is 2.2 billion more than in the previous year. The tourist destinations remained the same – Spain, particularly the Balearic Islands, Turkey, and Italy.
The faraway destination for German tourists – Indonesia – this year actively participated in the tourism fair as the partner country of ITB-2013. 'We are glad to bring you a few rays of sunshine,' said Indonesia's Minister of Tourism Mari Elka Pangestu at the ITB press conference. 'But if you want a few more sunny days, come to Indonesia,' she added with a welcoming smile. The minister's calculation regarding the soon-to-arrive snowy spring in Berlin was accurate. ITB participants and guests were entertained by performances by Indonesian singers, musicians, and dancers.
They represented the unique culture and nature of the largest archipelago in the world. It comprises about 17,000 islands. Indonesians also presented the best culinary delights and treated visitors to exotic national dishes. But they warned that to experience the sun and warmth, one would still have to come on their own to 'Beautiful Indonesia, the Heart of World Wonders,' as the motto of the partner country's exhibition pavilion read.
