Choice between leaving and prison

Israel offered illegal migrants to leave the country and receive money for it

As reported by RFI, Israel offers illegal immigrants to pay for a plane ticket and provide about 3,000 euros for the move. At the same time, the Israeli government took into account that refugees cannot return to either Eritrea or Sudan.

The regime in Eritrea has been found guilty by the UN of systematic crimes against humanity. And the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on charges of genocide. According to information from Israeli NGOs dealing with refugee issues, the Israeli government has signed agreements with third countries – Rwanda and Uganda – on their readiness to accept migrants deported from Israel.

Most refugees entered the country through Egypt before 2013, when Israel completed the construction of a wall on the border. The Israeli Interior Ministry has already stated that the offer to voluntarily leave the country will be valid until early March. After that, refugees illegally staying in the country will be arrested.

The Israeli authorities hope that the program will help expel tens of thousands of illegal migrants from the country. In 2017, according to official data, only 4,012 illegal refugees left the country, of which 3,332 were from sub-Saharan Africa.
