Most ethnic Germans move to Germany primarily from Russia and Kazakhstan. Only a few repatriates come from other former Soviet republics. The number of ethnic Germans in Russia is about 500,000. Thus, Russia is the world's first country in terms of the number of Germans living outside Germany, the epd agency writes, citing data from the German 'Association of Expellees' (BdV).
The largest number of late resettlers in Germany was registered in 1990, then their number gradually decreased every year. The fewest ethnic Germans moved to Germany in 2012 – only about 1,800 people.
After amendments to the 'Law on Expellees and Refugees' in the fall of 2013, the number of late resettlers began to grow again due to the simplification of the procedure for entering Germany for close relatives, explained Hörnschemeyer. It is assumed that the trend will continue in the coming years.
