Hungary Allows Visa-Free Transit

In addition, transit is permitted for citizens who have a residence permit from these countries, as well as from Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The new rules came into effect on September 1. The transit cannot exceed five days, and its duration must fit within the validity period of the visa. Visa-free transit will allow ground transport access to Slovenia and Austria without obtaining additional visas.

In a document circulated by the foreign policy department of the Hungarian Republic, it is specifically stipulated that the right not to obtain a Hungarian visa applies only to through travel: entry into and exit from Hungary cannot occur through the same border checkpoint. The border service of the Hungarian Republic may impose administrative liability on a foreign citizen who intends to leave Hungary through the border with the same neighboring country through which they previously entered.

The new rules will particularly help residents of Ukraine, Moldova, and southern Russia. Moreover, Hungary can become a good transit point – from there, a number of low-cost airlines fly to various European countries. Similar rules were introduced days ago by Poland.
