Venice is one of the cities most affected by inappropriate tourist behavior
As "Russkaya Germaniya" notes, the rules of conduct in Venice prohibit tourists from swimming in canals, drinking alcohol from 8 pm to 8 am, and even picnicking or snacking in public places. Tourists are forbidden to walk in swimsuits (including on private yachts moored within the city limits), as well as to lie on benches or even sit on steps with their legs stretched out.
In addition to a hefty fine of up to 500 euros, local police will issue violators an order banning re-entry into the city. Such strict rules will apply in the historic center of Venice, near all UNESCO World Heritage sites, on all types of public transport, as well as at the main pier and dock. Passengers at the city airport and railway station should also carefully study the list of prohibitions.
The new rules will affect not only the city's guests but also the local tourism business. For example, all restaurant and shop owners will now have to place trash bins near their establishments. Cafes and grocery stores will have to replace plastic packaging with biodegradable alternatives.
The authorities of Venice emphasize that such strict measures are, in their view, forced, necessary, and fully justified. Recall that last year Venice ranked 3rd in the European rating of cities most affected by inappropriate tourist behavior.
Note that those wishing to visit the city so beloved by romantics can expect other unpleasant surprises and innovations. Thus, from January 1, 2020, the tourist tax, which currently amounts to 3 euros, will increase to 6-10 euros depending on the season. From 2022, the procedure for preparing for a visit to the beautiful "city on water" may also become significantly more complicated for tourists – the authorities plan to introduce a system of advance booking of trips.
