In accordance with the law on amendments to the Criminal Code published in the newspaper “Neutral Turkmenistan”, Article 214 “Illegal Crossing of the State Border of Turkmenistan” provides for punishment by correctional labor for a term of up to two years or imprisonment for a term of up to five years. The same crime committed repeatedly, or committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, or by an organized group with the use of violence or the threat of its use, is punishable by imprisonment for a term of up to 10 years.
Earlier, according to Interfax, violation of the state border was punishable by imprisonment from two to five years. In addition, a person convicted under this article may be obliged to reside in a certain locality for a term of two to five years.
