Topping the list was New York's Hotel Carter. Tourists wrote about it: "It would be cleaner if I slept on the street"; "I travel a lot, but I have never seen such a dirty hotel where I feared so much for my health."
Continental Bayside Hotel in Miami Beach took second place and received such reviews: "A truly disgusting hotel, I was forced to sleep in my car"; "In the rooms, the walls are smeared with something sticky, all the furniture is broken and looks like it was dragged from a dump."
In third place was New York Inn. "Cockroaches everywhere! It seems that pest control was never carried out here. One of the cockroaches was so huge that it could easily help me carry my suitcase to the room"; "We couldn't look out the window because of mold"; "The bed linen was terrible – all covered in unidentifiable stains – and it was never changed during our entire eight-day stay," wrote guests.
Eden Roc Motel in Wildwood (New Jersey) took fourth place: "The room smelled of cat urine, and the air conditioner didn't work"; "Paint was peeling off the walls, and when we turned on the air conditioner, it blew mold on us."
Days Inn Cleveland Airport in Brook Park (Cleveland, Ohio) – in fifth place. Here's how tourists described it: "My blanket was burned with cigarettes, the sheets didn't fit the mattress, and the carpet was dirty"; "The bathroom was unfit for washing. I asked for a rag and cleaning product to clean it myself – note, by myself – but I was refused"; "Tiles were falling off, windows were broken in places, the carpet was dirty, as were the bed linen and towels. Disgusting."
In sixth place is Days Inn Airport in Tampa (Florida) with the following reviews: "I wouldn't even put an enemy in this motel"; "With growing horror, I discovered more and more bedbugs in the sheets, mattress cover, and the mattress itself"; "My room was literally covered in someone else's hair and stains – the carpet, bed, and even the curtains had them."
The budget hotel Travelodge Bangor in Bangor (Maine) took seventh place: "There is so much mold in the rooms that it's impossible to breathe"; "A disgusting place. One of those where you have to sleep with your eyes open."
Velda Rose Resort Hotel in Hot Springs (Arkansas) was in eighth place. Tourists write about it: "The floor was wet. There was also water on the bathroom floor, and we never figured out where it came from"; "The smell of mold everywhere. And you can see cockroaches in the room"; "There were holes in the roof, pipes were leaking too. The sheets in our room were dirty, and there were no towels in the shower."
The penultimate, ninth place was taken by Ramada Plaza Hotel at New York's JFK Airport with devastating reviews: "The bedbugs here have much better food than the guests"; "The room smelled like a dump"; "My room was recently renovated. If, of course, you agree that 30 years ago is recent. I needed a second shower immediately after the first."
And at the very end of the list is Days Inn & Suites Gatlinburg in Gatlinburg (Tennessee) with its rich wildlife: "Where are the suites? Maybe the cockroaches took them?"; "In the morning we were awakened by uninvited guests – ants attacked our room. They were literally everywhere. Part of their herd went home with us in our suitcase."
