The head of one of the branches of Austria's largest bank, Austria-Kreditanstalt, explains that Austrians indeed still do not hurry to part with their schilling reserves, although the euro has been in circulation for a year already. And traders at makeshift fairs only encourage this and, without hesitation, accept the old money. In the village of Oberndorf, near Salzburg, they have even declared a moratorium on the euro and accept only schillings. There is nothing illegal in this, and the traders will not be at a loss: until January 1, 2006, schillings can be exchanged for euros at the Austrian National Bank.
