According to the State Department, the tightening of the rules for obtaining J-1 visas is aimed at ensuring the well-being of foreigners coming to the country on this type of visa, writes ICEF Monitor. Indeed, in recent years, there have been more frequent reports that J-1 visa holders work in the US in unacceptable workplaces and are used primarily as low-paid workers.
The new rules for obtaining a J-1 visa, introduced by the State Department, protect foreign students from working in warehouses or packaging, night shifts, or work that the Department of Labor has defined as 'hazardous for youth' (including those related to gambling, traveling fairs, massage, or tattooing). The list also includes oil exploration and most construction site work.
In addition, candidates for the J-1 visa program must have sufficient English language skills to interact successfully in an English-speaking environment.
