Ukrainians 'walked' into third place

The researchers took into account the number of steps residents take daily. It turned out that the laziest in the world are Indonesians, who take only 3,513 steps per day.

The leaders of the ranking were residents of Hong Kong, who average 6,880 steps per day. In second place was China (6,189 steps), and in third – Ukraine (6,107). Russia was in fifth place: on average, Russians take 5,900 steps daily. The Czech Republic took 11th place. It turned out that the average Czech takes 5,508 steps per day.

As Vinegret.cz reports, the global average was 4,961 steps. At the same time, scientists noted that the obesity level among residents depends not so much on average physical activity levels as on the disparity in activity levels between population groups.

"If in a certain country part of the population is very active and another part is not, then the size of the gap between them is a serious indicator of the obesity level in that society," explained one of the authors of the study, bioengineer Scott Delp.

The largest gap between the "active" and "inactive" populations was found in Saudi Arabia, Australia, Canada, Egypt, and the United States. The smallest difference in physical activity was recorded in Hong Kong, China, Sweden, South Korea, and the Czech Republic.
