Earlier, on May 11, 2017, the EU Council approved a visa-free regime for Ukraine. "The adoption of the regulation on visa liberalization for Ukrainian citizens is an important event that will help strengthen ties between the Ukrainian people and the EU. It follows Ukraine's completion of necessary reforms in a number of areas, including migration, order and security, external relations and fundamental rights," the website of the body said.
If serious problems with migration or security arise in the EU after the abolition of visas for Ukrainians, the recently revised visa suspension mechanism by Brussels will allow the new measure to be revoked, the statement stressed.
Recall that on April 6, members of the European Parliament voted by a majority in favor of visa liberalization for Ukrainian citizens. 521 deputies voted in favor, 75 were against, and 36 parliamentarians abstained.
Ukrainian citizens will be able to "enter the EU for 90 days in any 180-day period for business and tourist purposes, as well as for family reasons." To enter the EU, Ukrainians will need biometric passports. As in the case of Georgia, the visa-free regime does not give them the right to work in EU countries.
