Anyone can get a scholarship to study in the Czech Republic
According to Radio Prague, scholarship places are established on the basis of a resolution of the Czech government within the framework of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. Within the framework of international cooperation, the Czech Republic grants scholarships for study in Czech and English. Klara Bila from the press department of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports answers some questions about the provision of scholarships.
– Please tell us, who are these scholarships awarded to?
– Based on a government resolution of April 25, 2012, at least 130 scholarships for study at state universities of the Czech Republic are confirmed for citizens of developing countries. Scholarships are granted for the academic year. The applicant fills out an online form located on the website of the Ministry of Education (www.msmt.cz), including tests. A mandatory condition for admission to bachelor's and full master's study programs in the Czech Republic is the completion of full secondary or full secondary vocational education corresponding to secondary education in the Czech Republic with a school-leaving certificate. A condition for the award of a Czech government scholarship for study in English is a good knowledge of English.
Then the applicant undergoes an interview at the diplomatic mission. The documentation of the best applicants is sent to the Czech Republic and evaluated by state universities, which recommend the best candidates. The minister's advisory body then recommends the allocation of scholarships to specific applicants. After approval, scholarships are awarded by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports to specific individuals. An annual plan for the distribution of scholarships for the next academic year is drawn up.
– For what fields of study are scholarships awarded?
– Scholarships are intended for study in bachelor's, master's and doctoral study programs in the Czech language, with the exception of artistic fields. Diplomatic missions recommend specific fields for each country. Furthermore, scholarships are awarded for continuation of study in master's and doctoral programs in English. Study in English is offered in the following programs: economics, computer science, agriculture, mechanical engineering, environmental science.
– What is the amount of the scholarships and the duration of study under the scholarship program?
– Currently, the amount of the scholarship for students in bachelor's, master's and continuing master's programs is 14,000 crowns (500 euros). For students in the doctoral program, it is 15,000 crowns (535 euros). The duration of the scholarship corresponds to the period of study in the respective program.
Scholarships of the Czech Republic are intended exclusively to support the education of adult foreign students from developing and needy third world countries. Citizens who have permanent residence status in the Czech Republic, EU citizens, and citizens of the Czech Republic are not eligible to apply for study under such a program. A scholarship cannot be awarded to persons under 18 years of age. This means that by the start of the studies, the applicant must have reached the age of 18.
