More Master's Students in US Universities
According to the American Council on Graduate Education, after three years of decline, the number of foreign master's students in US universities increased by 1% compared to 2005.
By nationality, the most students came from India (32%) and China (20%). The most popular fields of study were engineering and business, chosen by 22% and 10% of all foreign master's students in 2006.
More Foreign Students in Sweden
In the recently published report "Education at a Glance 2006", it is noted that Sweden has made a significant breakthrough in attracting foreign students to its universities. In 2004, 8.5% of the 36,458 students at Swedish universities were foreigners. On average, among the countries included in the analytical note, the percentage of foreign students was 7.3%.
Overall, student mobility is increasing worldwide. In 2000, 1.9 million students preferred to study in another country, while in 2004 this figure was 2.7 million. Sweden accounted for 1% of international students. Analysts suggest that, despite its modest size, Sweden will continue to increase the number of foreign students. This is not surprising because Sweden spends 7.5% of its GDP on education, ranking 4th in the world after Norway (7.6%), Iceland (7.8%), and Denmark (8.3%).
In 2004, the breakdown of foreign students by region was as follows: 20,254 students came to Sweden from Europe, 4,411 from Asia, 1,441 from North America, 954 from Africa, 1,026 from South America, and 325 from Oceania.
As for nationalities, the most numerous were Finns (4,094), Germans (2,859), Norwegians (1,504), French (1,484), Americans (1,083), and Danes (1,031). From Asian countries, as always, China and India were first in numbers. In 1996, there were only 20 Indians studying in Sweden, but in 2004 there were already 926.
The most popular disciplines were social sciences, business, and law. They were studied by 34.8% of foreign students. 17.9% chose engineering, industrial production and construction, 12.4% science, 9.1% health care and social work, 4.8% education, 1.8% service sector, 1.1% agriculture.
First Entrepreneurship Faculty Opened in the US
As reported by CNN, Grand Canyon University is opening a faculty of entrepreneurship in January 2007. This will be the world's first faculty specializing exclusively in training entrepreneurs.
Tuition will be $12,000 per year. Grand Canyon University is a private Christian university located in Phoenix, Arizona. It currently has 11,000 students.
Top Ten Most Expensive US Universities
CNN, based on data from the Chronicle of Higher Education, identified the most expensive universities in the country. Tuition for the 2006/07 academic year at George Washington University, located in Washington, D.C., is $37,820. The increase compared to the previous year was 3.9%.
Next are: University of Richmond (Virginia) - $36,550, 4.9%; Kenyon College (Ohio) - $36,050, 6.2%; Vassar College (New York) - $36,030, 6.6%; Bucknell University (Pennsylvania) - $36,002, 9.8%; Bennington College (Vermont) - $35,250, 5%; Columbia University (New York) - $35,166, 5.8%; Wesleyan University (Connecticut) - $35,144, 5.9%; Trinity College (Connecticut) - $35,130, 4.5%.

One in Six Students Studied Remotely
In a report by the Sloan Consortium, a group of American colleges involved in distance education, it is stated that 3.2 million people, or one in six students, took at least one distance learning course.
In 2005, 850,000 more students used distance learning. The increase compared to 2004 was 40%. According to the consulting firm Eduventures, over 80% of online students are studying at the undergraduate level. These are older people combining work and study.
