The Prosecutor General said that this inspection was prompted by an investigation into a criminal case against officials of the State Center for Child Adoption of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine on charges of violating legislation during the adoption of children by foreigners. According to him, at the request of the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine, law enforcement agencies of other countries, as well as the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, are participating in determining the fate of Ukrainian children.
Svyatoslav Piskun said that in total it will be necessary to determine the fate of about three thousand Ukrainian children adopted by foreigners. According to him, one of the cases involving violations of the law during the adoption of Ukrainian children has been sent to court, and another will not be closed until this inspection is completed.
As reported, in February the Prosecutor General's Office opened criminal cases against officials of the State Center for Child Adoption of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine under Articles 169 and 358 of the Criminal Code on charges of committing illegal acts during adoption and using knowingly forged documents. According to the prosecutor's office, these abuses became widespread both at the Adoption Center and in the regions, and turned into an underground profitable business for civil servants.
Over six years, foreigners in Ukraine adopted more than 8,400 children through the State Adoption Center. At the same time, the Center has no data on the fate of more than 4,000 of them, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
