Starting in October, the registration period opened for the Diversity Visa (DV) lottery program for immigrants from various countries, which annually awards up to 55,000 U.S. immigrant visas to people from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States. Remember that registration closes at noon Eastern Time (17:00 GMT) on Tuesday, November 3, 2015. Candidates who can proceed with the application process will be selected randomly by lottery.
If you plan to register for a DV visa, avoid fraud by following these tips.
Look for the .gov domain
Only visa information on U.S. government websites with an address ending in '.gov' is official. Official U.S. government email addresses also end in '.gov'. Any visa-related emails coming from an address that does not end in '.gov' should be suspect. Do not be fooled by images of the American flag, the Capitol, the White House, or the Statue of Liberty. Any online resources on this topic that offer registration and whose address does not end in '.gov' are likely fraudulent.
Never send money for a DV visa application
Fees for the DV visa application are paid to the cashier of the U.S. embassy or consulate during your scheduled appointment. You will pay in person. The U.S. government will never ask you to send advance payment by check, money order, or bank transfer.
Your application status can only be checked online
DV visa applicants must check their status online on the DV application status check page at http://www.dvlottery.state.gov. The U.S. government may send a reminder by email, but will never contact participants by regular mail or notify lottery winners by email. The only way to know if you have been selected to continue the application process is to monitor the status check page.
