The safest place in the US was Ramapo, near New York. In a city with a population of about 113,000 people, 688 crimes occurred over the year, among which no murders. One of the lowest crime rates in 2007 was recorded in the city of O'Fallon, which is located near the "dangerous" St. Louis.

The compilers of the ranking note that they have officially stopped using the terms "dangerous" and "safe" in relation to the localities on the list, since they are subjective. The ranking is based on FBI data on murders, rapes, thefts, robberies, vehicle thefts, and armed assaults for the year.
