The Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family (Catalan: Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia) in Barcelona must pay the authorities of the Catalan capital 36 million euros in fines for having carried out construction without a license for 133 years. This was reported by RFI citing the newspaper El Pais. Recall that the famous project by Antoni Gaudi has been built with private donations since 1882.
According to the newspaper, the cathedral must pay the entire amount within ten years. Of this, 22 million euros will go to improving public transport, and 7 million to building a direct access to the cathedral from the metro. The cathedral's annual budget is 80 million euros.
City authorities also noted that to continue work in 2019, builders will have to obtain a license. To do this, they will be forced to change the cathedral's construction plan.
As noted by the city hall, the 36 million euros that Sagrada Familia will transfer should compensate for the additional costs incurred by the city due to construction. The Temple of the Holy Family is the most visited building in Barcelona and attracts 20 million tourists to the city annually.
