In Thailand, for example, several cases are known. “The elephants began to trumpet. It sounded like crying. I looked at the sea and saw a huge wave. Then we all ran to the mountains,” says elephant driver Wit Aniwat.
And on the famous Khao Lak beach, the animals themselves carried tourist riders to a safe place. “The drivers could not cope with the rushing animals. They seemed to have gone mad,” says Dang Salangam. But when the place from which the elephants rushed was covered by a giant wave, people realized what they owed to their pets.
