Snares for Ornithologists

Of course, the traditional contingent of tourists will remain – Germans and Britons, who most of all love to lie in the sun and drink beer. However, this type of tourist is gradually moving from Spain to cheap Turkey and Morocco. “Therefore we decided to diversify this market,” said the director of the country's tourism committee, Raimon Martinez Fraile. “One of the directions we pay special attention to is attracting ornithologists and everyone who loves birdwatching to our country. This is very important for us.”

According to Fraile's calculations, about 20 million people across Europe belong to various ornithological clubs. “These people like to just sit at some observation point and watch birds all morning,” the director continues. “If that is what they need, then they simply cannot find a better place than Spain.” In addition, according to Fraile, ornithologists belong to the expensive segment of the tourism market, so they will not limit themselves to cheap and short holidays. “Most likely, they will choose a long full-fledged holiday in the countryside,” the director is sure.

Fraile will have to try hard to attract bird lovers from all over Europe to the Spanish shores. After all, income from tourism is an important item of Spain's GDP, which, according to some estimates, is up to 11%.
