The opening of the external borders of the Schengen Area is not yet being discussed
As RFI notes, an exception will be Spain, which will open its borders to all residents of the Schengen Area no earlier than July 1. Also postponed until early July is the decision on opening the external borders of the European Union and the Schengen Area. The 27 EU ministers decided that the opening of external borders can only be discussed after the complete lifting of internal controls in the Schengen Area.
French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe supported the decision to open borders within the Schengen Area but warned that France would impose a 14-day quarantine as a reciprocal measure for residents of those countries that introduce such quarantine measures against France. And the head of French diplomacy, Jean-Yves Le Drian, stated that the decision to open the EU's external borders would need to be made "around June 15."
Italy opened its borders to residents of the Schengen Area on June 3. Greece published a list of 29 countries whose citizens will be able to come to Greece for holidays starting June 15. Initially, the list did not include the European states most affected by the pandemic – France, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The decision was later revised.
According to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, as of June 5, 1,423,645 cases of coronavirus infection were registered in EU countries, as well as in Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and the United Kingdom. The total number of deaths was 168,400. The highest number of deaths from COVID-19 occurred among residents of the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Spain, and Belgium.
