St. Isaac's Cathedral in Saint Petersburg
You can also get to know Saint Petersburg on a sightseeing bus tour. Unfortunately, buses sometimes quickly pass by interesting attractions and often get stuck in traffic, so many historical places you pass by are unlikely to stay in your memory. Therefore, it is better to take a walk through the central part of the city on the Neva yourself. Then you will not only see the main monuments and remember them well, but also take many photos.
For your convenience, put on comfortable shoes and start your walk from Nevsky Prospekt, taking the metro to Gostiny Dvor or Nevsky Prospekt station and exiting towards the Griboyedov Canal. To better orient yourself in the city, buy a map of Saint Petersburg at the Dom Knigi bookstore on Nevsky Prospekt. The building that houses this store is also a historical monument, known as the Singer Company Building.
Now we head along Nevsky Prospekt towards Palace Square and, after reaching Bolshaya Morskaya Street, turn right. You will see the Triumphal Arch of the General Staff Building and behind it – Palace Square and the Winter Palace. The world-famous Hermitage Museum located inside has a collection of over 3 million exhibits.
One of the main attractions of Saint Petersburg is St. Isaac's Cathedral. You can visit both the cathedral and the colonnade, from which you will see a panorama of the Northern Capital. On St. Isaac's Square, you will see the monument to Nicholas I and opposite – the Mariinsky Palace. Nearby is Senate Square and the monument to Peter the Great – the Bronze Horseman.
Return to the Palace Embankment and cross the Palace Bridge to the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island. From here you can clearly see the place where the history of Saint Petersburg began – Hare Island and the Peter and Paul Fortress. If you are here at 12 o'clock, you will hear the cannon shot from the Naryshkin Bastion – one of the symbols of Saint Petersburg.
From Troitskaya Square, you can cross the Trinity Bridge to the Palace Embankment and reach the Summer Garden. Not far from here, on the Griboyedov Canal Embankment, is the Church of the Resurrection of Christ – the Savior on Spilled Blood.
If you still have energy and time, you can go to Nevsky Prospekt and walk to the Kazan Cathedral. Visiting all these attractions of Saint Petersburg can take you from 6 hours to a whole day.
