Around 65% of their earnings, or 13 billion rubles per year, migrants send to their home countries. Romodanovsky cited Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova as examples, noting that more than 30% of the GDP of these countries is made up of money earned by their citizens in Russia. Earlier, the FMS stated that migrants' contribution to the Russian economy is $50 billion annually.
According to Russian officials, about 1.65 million labor migrants are officially registered in the country, and about two million more foreigners work illegally. However, independent experts believe that these figures are significantly underestimated and the actual number of migrants in Russia is much higher.
Migrants often try to hide their real income because the income tax for them is 30%, not 13% as for Russian residents. Anyone who has officially lived in the country for more than six months is considered a resident.
