Shipping cars from abroad is nowadays a highly developed business

Special criminal groups specializing in this type of theft cause damage from their activities, for example, in the US alone annually amounting to about $7 billion. As the sad statistics of Interpol show, out of 110,000 vehicles in Western Europe between 2007 and 2008, they were successfully resold to illegal owners in CIS countries. The most popular are Korean-made cars: Kia Ceed, Kia Soul, Hyundai, and others.

The situation in the Russian Federation is no better. Especially after the introduction of a customs duty on the import of foreign cars of 5 ECU per 1 cm3 of engine displacement, which in some cases amounts to the full cost of the car. Thus, about 10,000 foreign cars were detected. With such a manipulation, the shortfall in the country's budget amounted to hundreds of billions of rubles. About 200 criminal cases were initiated over the past period on the facts of illegal import of foreign cars.

At the same time, there are legal companies engaged in shipping cars from abroad. Mostly, cars are shipped to CIS countries from Europe and the United States. Such cars are often purchased at numerous car auctions held in the United States. The scale of this business is quite large and reaches more than 100,000 units per week. The main route for shipping cars is via port sea routes. Also, specialized organizations provide an additional range of services for customs documentation, offering full assistance in registration and maintenance of cars.

The cost of cars at US auctions is approximately: a Land Rover from the US will cost about 870,000 rubles, a Mercedes-Benz GL 550 AMG costs about $135,000, a BMW 330i – $31,900.

The total cost of delivery is also affected by the place from which the car was exported and where it is to go. The main ports for car shipments are the ports of Miami and New York. Thus, the estimated cost of shipping a car from Miami to Kotka is $1,200. From Miami to Novorossiysk, that amount will be $1,350, to Klaipeda – about $1,200. But sending a car from Miami to Odessa will cost $1,425. From the port of New York to the same destinations will be slightly less.
