Traveling by car or bicycle makes for an exciting journey through Mallorca. Traveling this way, you can discover a completely different Mallorca: with its small fishing villages, historical monuments and monasteries, as well as museums and, of course, the amazing Mediterranean nature.
In the capital of Mallorca, the city of Palma, is the ancient cathedral La Seu. Its construction dates back to the beginning of the 13th century. Since the cathedral was built over several centuries, its design incorporates several completely different architectural styles, which gives the cathedral a special character.
Next to the cathedral, on the city waterfront, is an equally beautiful building with a centuries-old history – the Almudaina Palace, built in the early 10th century for a Moorish ruler. The palace still serves as a government residence – today it is the official summer residence of the Spanish king himself!
Not far from Palma, among mountain forests, lies a beautiful 14th-century castle built as a residence for the kings of Mallorca. The castle's shape is unusual – it is round. Towers protrude from the rounded walls. The castle was, by the way, not only a residence but also a defensive fortress that withstood many sieges.
In the mountains near the town of Esporles, surrounded by gardens, alleys, fountains and ponds, the luxurious mansion La Granja has stood for over ten centuries. Its owners at various times were kings, counts, and even monks. Now it houses an ethnographic museum.
In the north of the island, in a mountain valley, hidden from view is the Lluc Monastery. It was founded in the 13th century and was the most important pilgrimage site on Mallorca. Today it is a popular tourist attraction.
The nature of the island is diverse. A masterpiece of natural thought, so to speak, are the Dragon Caves near Porto Cristo. The caves are underground and stretch about 2 km. Here there are amazing stalactites and Lake Martel – the largest underground lake in Europe, with a depth of up to 8 meters. With artificial lighting, it all looks stunning.
On the island, in its southeastern part, there is a very beautiful nature reserve Mondragó, founded in the early 1990s. There are many routes for cycling and hiking. Mondragó is an excellent place for scuba diving enthusiasts. All conditions for this are provided here.
