"Dear most wanted fugitives in Europe! This summer, the police want to bring you home," – with this headline, the police service announced the start of its summer campaign, reports RFI. "The addresses of these criminals are still unknown to us, and we cannot send them postcards. Can you help us find them?" – Europol appealed to residents of 21 European countries where the suspects allegedly committed crimes.
"Greetings from Cyprus! Dear Ivan, we invite you to return to the island of Aphrodite. Our beaches are full of oysters, pearls, and we are waiting for you next to them," – Europol wrote in a postcard to Ivan Milovanovic, accused of armed robbery and complicity in a serious crime. "We know you are a master of forgery, but there is only one real Santa. He is waiting for you," – the police greet in another postcard Jakko Ilari Nyrminen from Finland, wanted for fraud and document forgery.
According to Europol, the police's humorous campaign may help them catch criminals. At the end of November 2016, the service released a Christmas calendar with the faces of the most wanted. "The Dutch saw this calendar, recognized a Briton who worked as a waiter in a bar in Amsterdam, and reported it to the police. Two days later he was arrested, and we expect a similar effect from this campaign," said Europol press secretary Tina Hollevoet.
