The number of interethnic marriages is growing in Poland
"Recently, the number of marriages between citizens of Poland and Ukraine has sharply increased," says demographer Piotr Szukalski. In his opinion, this is due to the growing number of migrants from Ukraine and their assimilation in Poland.
Szukalski notes that over the past two years, the number of marriages of Polish citizens with citizens of other countries has increased from 3,367 to 4,663, that is, by almost 38%. Thus, if previously the share of binational marriages was about 1.5% of all marriages in Poland, now this figure is 2.4%. Speaking only of Polish-Ukrainian marriages, their number has increased from 400 to 1,000.
The demographer adds that among binational marriages there is a certain trend: Poles most often choose Ukrainian women (872), Russian women (107), and Belarusian women (99) as spouses, while Polish women choose British men (675), German men (322), Italian men (239), and Ukrainian men (184).
As Polskie Radio notes, sociologists observed a similar phenomenon when, after Poland's accession to the EU, the number of marriages between Polish women and German, Italian, and Greek men increased. It is noted that marriages of Poles with Ukrainian women are significantly stronger than marriages of Polish women and Poles with foreigners, for example, from Great Britain or Germany.
