Almost 23% of women who gave birth in the US in 2002 are non-American, reports Lenta.ru. As specialists at the Center for Immigration Studies note, these figures are comparable only to the birth rates of 1910, when the United States was swept by a wave of immigrants from Eastern Europe. At that time, foreign-born women accounted for 22% of women giving birth.
In total, out of 4 million infants born in the country in 2002, approximately 915.8 thousand were children of immigrant women. At the same time, in 1970, this figure was significantly lower and amounted to 228,486 children out of 3.7 million, that is, only 6%. Moreover, as the Center for Immigration Studies found, almost every tenth child in the US is born to a Mexican woman.
The corresponding data were obtained by the Center for Immigration Studies staff after analyzing documents provided by the National Center for Health Statistics. The study took into account birth rates both among legal immigrants and among illegal ones. At the same time, the citizenship of the child's father was not taken into account.
The Center for Immigration Studies believes that this birth rate situation could lead to immigrants ceasing to assimilate in the United States and creating their own society living by different laws. Therefore, representatives of the Center believe that strict restrictions on immigration need to be introduced. Opponents of restrictions are convinced that such fears are completely unfounded.
