Wintering in the Tropics

THAILAND

For a long-term stay in Thailand, you rent apartments or houses. You can try to find housing online, but you should be cautious with that option and choose verified realtors. You can book a hotel room for three to four days in advance and look for some options on the spot.

In winter, a one-bedroom house can be rented for $450-550 per month, houses with two bedrooms – for $650-900. Some houses are not rented for less than three months.

In large cities, the most affordable option is apartments, or as they are called here, "condos". These are usually studios that differ little from hotel rooms. You will have to pay $130-220 per month for the simplest option, $220-300 for an option with all necessary furniture.

INDIA

The most popular destination for a holiday in India is traditionally Goa. In winter, it's the "high season," so rent will be more expensive. A house with one or two bedrooms can be rented from locals for $200-300 per month, a large house for a company – for $330-450.

Be prepared that not everyone will be willing to rent a house for just three months, and when renting only for the winter, the price will be the highest. When renting for a month or more, the obligation to pay for utilities and internet usually falls on the clients.

BALI

A very modest house for one person can be rented for $150-200 per month. For the same money, you can find a simple apartment or room in a guesthouse. A better house, with two or three bedrooms and all necessary furniture, will cost $330-450.

You are unlikely to rent a villa with a pool for this money for the winter – for a short term, such offers cost much more.

In Bali, utilities are usually included in the price, sometimes cleaning is also included, but you can refuse it during the bargaining process. Haggling is common in Asia, so you can look for more expensive offers, hoping to bring the price down. In Bali, it is customary to pay for the entire term upfront. Firstly, this way you can get a discount, and secondly, ensure that the housing will indeed be yours for the entire agreed period.

VENEZUELA

A small studio apartment in Venezuela can be rented for $250-330 per month, renting a room will be cheaper – for $150-200. Decent two-bedroom apartments with a kitchen can be rented for $450-650 per month. Renting a house will be significantly more expensive – $1100-1300 per month, and a villa with a pool and garden – at least $2600.

Depending on the terms, payment for utilities, internet, and security may be included in the rent or charged separately.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

A studio apartment in the Dominican Republic can be rented for $240-300, and this amount will include security, internet, and utilities. A one-bedroom apartment with a separate kitchen and bedroom will cost more – from $500. Two- or three-bedroom apartments can be rented for $650-1000. Interestingly, large apartments are not very popular in the Dominican Republic, so they will cost less than renting a separate house.

Houses start at $650 for the most modest furnishings. Villa rental prices start from $850 per month and vary depending on location, number of rooms, and rental period.
