Underwater museum of sunken ships opened for divers in Greece
As reported by «Russkaya Germaniya», the main exhibits of the new museum are amphorae from a sunken ancient Greek ship. «This ship lies at a depth of 21-28 meters off the coast of the island of Peristera. The ship carries between 3,000 and 4,000 amphorae,» said the municipal council of Alonissos.
The ship, which sank due to a powerful storm, was transporting thousands of amphorae of wine from Halkidiki to the island of Skopelos. Experts believe the sunken vessel fell victim to the elements around 425 BC. The hull and wreckage were discovered by a Greek fisherman in 1985.
Experts who studied the ship note that its size was quite impressive for its time, allowing it to carry a large number of amphorae with valuable contents in a single voyage. Almost all the amphorae – unique artifacts from ancient Greece – were damaged during the shipwreck. The valuable artifacts were carefully studied and restored by specialists.
The new unusual museum is open for visits from August 3 to October 2. However, not everyone will be able to approach the rare exhibit. Certified divers, both professionals and amateurs, will be able to descend into the depths of the sea into the abyss of ancient history to the ship that has preserved the spirit of bygone times. For other museum visitors, a virtual exhibition is presented at the Alonissos information center.
In the future, Greek authorities plan to open four more museums of sunken ships. This initiative is intended not only to preserve the memory of ancient Greek history but also to attract more foreign tourists to the country.
