To apply for a Schengen visa, you must submit biometric data
A feature of the Schengen Area is that by obtaining a visa to one of its countries, you can confidently visit all the states that have signed the Schengen Agreement. For those doing this for the first time, in order to learn how to apply for a Schengen visa under the new rules, they should familiarize themselves with them in advance.
Rules supplemented
Currently, the number of signatory countries of Schengen is 26 states. The vast majority of them are members of the European Union. According to the rules of the Schengen Agreement, in 2013 a single list of documents with uniform requirements for their preparation was adopted for visa applications.
To enhance the level of European security, a common information database is in place. Various countries around the world are gradually connecting to the Visa Information System (VIS). It allows for the rapid exchange of necessary information about Schengen visa applicants. The database includes:
• personal information about the visa applicant contained in the application form;
• biometric data of applicants, including fingerprints and a digital photograph;
• information on decisions made regarding the issuance or refusal of a visa.
The list of documents required for visa issuance includes basic official papers. These include:
• a valid foreign passport (original and a photocopy of the first page must be submitted);
• a completed Schengen visa application form;
• international medical insurance;
• additionally, documents to confirm solvency may be required.
The new system requires mandatory submission of personal biometric data at the consular department or visa center. This includes a digital photograph and fingerprints of all 10 fingers. The procedure must be completed by those applying for a Schengen visa for the first time. This information is intended for storage in the VIS and will be valid for 5 years. Fingerprinting is not required for applicants under 12 years of age; children only need to be photographed.
As for travelers who have valid Schengen visas, they do not need to undergo the mandatory biometric data submission procedure additionally.
