The stanitsa of Yessentuki was officially founded in 1825. However, by that time the numerous mineral water springs and their healing properties were already widely known. Bottled Yessentuki water soon began to be transported for sale to many cities of Russia.
Every year the Cossack stanitsa received more and more guests. People of different classes flocked to "the waters." The construction of hotels, sanatoriums, and dachas proceeded rapidly.
In Soviet times, Yessentuki became the largest balneological resort in the Pyatigorye region. 26 sanatoriums and numerous hotels welcome guests all year round.
Yessentuki gives the impression of a quiet and cozy provincial town. There are indeed few residents, only about 9,000 people.
