Undoubtedly, first and foremost Greece is famous for its cultural heritage and a huge number of historical monuments, but it is worth going there not least for an island holiday. The beautiful and mild Mediterranean climate allows you to feel comfortable there almost all year round. And there are plenty of beaches and coastlines for everyone.
One of the most famous to any schoolchild is the island of Crete. Choosing it for your introduction to island Greece, you will not only be able to enjoy the joy of carefree rest on the beaches, but also see many Hellenic attractions. It is thanks to this combination that so many tourists strive to get there.
Upon arriving in Crete, you will not be able to bypass the famous archaeological reserve of Knossos. There are plenty of such museums there, but this one is notable because on its territory is located one of the most famous architectural monuments – the Palace of Knossos. Also on the island, the ancient Temple of Apollo has survived to our time, it is located in the small town of Gortyn.
No less popular are the caves located throughout the island. For example, this applies to the Zoniana Cave – one of the longest and most beautiful thanks to a huge number of colorful stalactites. And, of course, the Dikteon Cave, in which, according to legend, Rhea gave birth to little Zeus. By the way, it is significantly more beautiful than many of the caves of Crete, of which there are no more, no less – about two hundred.
But do not think that island Greece is limited to just one Crete. This country can offer tourists many more places for a variety of holidays – this includes the island of Santorini, a wonderful place for newlyweds, and the island of Rhodes for lovers of vibrant nightlife, and the island of Zakynthos – one of the southernmost and greenest in the whole country. The latter is often called Turtle Island, because it is a national marine park where a very rare species of turtle, the loggerhead sea turtle, comes to breed.
Choosing where exactly is the best place to relax in Greece, it is very easy to get lost. After all, this country abounds with wonderful resorts and places worth visiting. Of course, you cannot see everything in one go. But whatever you choose, know – you will not be disappointed with your holiday there.
