Mullet is one of the most common fish on the Black Sea coast and, perhaps, one of the most desired trophies. Most often it is found near sandy shoals and in rocky areas at a depth of about 5-7 m (sometimes more). Mullet is an extremely fast and fairly cautious fish. Its distinguishing feature is the ability to quickly cover long distances and easily jump out of the water. Mullet usually prefers to move in schools led by the largest specimens. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you can encounter solitary wandering fish; they are less cautious and easily allow the hunter to approach within range for an accurate shot.
Mullet is always in motion, so spearfishing for it is considered quite difficult and requires a certain level of skill, dexterity, accuracy, and maneuverability from the hunter. But that is precisely what makes it so exciting. The hunter gets caught up in the thrill of the chase for mullet and will not stop until they secure the desired trophy. Experienced spearfishers advise hunting for mullet between vertical cliffs. Firstly, it is often in such places that the fish feed, and therefore their attention is more scattered. Secondly, the cliffs can serve as a kind of cover for the hunter.
If you are lucky and spot a single fish, do not rush to attack immediately; let it get a little used to your presence. Mullet is a fairly maneuverable fish, so it is better to hunt it in a more or less enclosed space to be able to predict its movement trajectory. It is not enough to find mullet; you also need to chase it. And of course, a speargun is best suited for hunting this fish.
A very important point is the shot itself. Not very experienced hunters think that the main thing is to hit the fish, and where does not matter. But that is not the case at all. The fact is that each fish has specific places to aim for. For mullet, it is the back. It is possible that a shot to any other part may also succeed, but hitting, for example, the belly, you run the risk of losing the fish, which with one sharp jerk can easily free itself.
When spearfishing for mullet, it is necessary to use an active search tactic, and even if at first glance it seems that this fish is very easy to find, do not rush to rejoice, but first try to catch it.
