22.6% of intra-European flights were delayed by more than 15 minutes in the first quarter of this year. This is 1.5% more than last year and is the worst figure since 2002. The increase in delays was due to airport congestion and problems with aircraft pre-flight preparation.
The worst of the 27 airports surveyed was Madrid (33.3% delays), followed by London (Heathrow), Frankfurt, Barcelona and Paris (Roissy CDG).
The best was Düsseldorf (17.6% delays). The next places were taken by London (Gatwick), Vienna, Brussels and Lisbon. Significant improvements compared to last year were noted only in Geneva, Amsterdam, Zurich and Vienna.
Brazilian Varig sold at auction for $24 million
The Brazilian airline Varig was sold at auction in Rio de Janeiro for $24 million. The only buyer to participate in the auction was VarigLog, which is the main cargo carrier of the bankrupt airline giant.
With the acquisition of Varig, VarigLog assumes the obligation to pay the current debts of the passenger company, which amount to $150 million, within the next 30 days. In addition, it will be obliged to provide flights to passengers who have already paid for Varig's services, totaling nearly $120 million, as well as debts for transport and property rental.
