With the aim of improving the admissions procedure and easing the workload of universities, the plenary assembly of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) decided to organize a centralized admissions service for applications from international applicants. At the initial stage, HRK plans to support the pilot project of Berlin and Brandenburg universities, which is still under development, and universities from other federal states may also participate. The service will begin work in the winter semester 2004/2005. Its staff will conduct a formal check of international applicants' documents. The selection of applicants and admission will be carried out by each university independently. In the future, the admissions service will be financed by a fee charged for processing application documents.
