As RFI reports, within six months the Dutch authorities intend to select ten best projects that meet several criteria: the farm must produce at least 6.5 tons of dry cannabis per year and offer ten different types of cannabis or hashish. The product will undergo mandatory quality checks.
In 2018, the government approved an experiment to supply legally produced marijuana to coffee shops. Ten municipalities were selected to participate. They will monitor the production of cannabis and its supply to coffee shops.
In 1976, the Netherlands decriminalized the sale of small amounts of marijuana – no more than five grams. In addition, by law, every citizen can grow no more than five cannabis plants for personal use.
However, mass production and wholesale supply of marijuana in the country are still prohibited. Therefore, local coffee shops have to cooperate with representatives of organized crime. The authorities hope that legalizing production will help reduce crime rates in cities and the black market turnover.
