Failed Vacation: How to Get Your Money Back for Tickets?

Different rules for ticket refunds apply to domestic trains and international transport.

But when something suddenly goes wrong and the vacation is postponed for a number of reasons beyond the control of management or the employee themselves, everyone wants to get their money back. This is not surprising: if not this month, then next, the trip will still happen, and it is very important that the funds accumulated by then are enough for all the planned activities. After all, every lost ruble translates into a restriction on the vacation, which no one will like. Therefore, it is so important to know exactly when, how, and following what rules you need to return previously purchased tickets.

So, it is worth understanding: different rules for ticket refunds apply to domestic trains and international transport. Just as it is easier to buy a train ticket for domestic travel, it is also easier to return it or exchange it. Which is sometimes a much more profitable solution. If the goal is specifically a refund, then three rules apply.

1. If the refund is made at least 8 hours before departure, you can confidently claim a full refund of the amount paid.

2. If more than 2 but less than 8 hours remain before departure, the carrier has the right to refund only the cost of the ticket and 50% of the reserved seat price.

3. When unforeseen circumstances derail plans literally on the eve of the trip or the passenger simply missed the departure (stuck in traffic, overslept, forgot to wind the mechanical watch, etc.), they will definitely get a full refund for the train ticket. But only if no more than 12 hours have passed since departure. And that's it – the cost of the reserved seat is not refundable, nor are any other related expenses.

If a long-distance trip abroad is canceled, the refund time frames are somewhat stricter. First, the full amount spent will be refunded if the buyer submits a refund request no later than 24 hours before departure. Second, half the cost of the reserved seat and the ticket price will be returned if you contact the ticket office within 6 hours before the time indicated on the ticket. If you fail to meet that time frame, you can only get a refund for the ticket price, and only if no more than 3 hours have passed since departure.
