Germans gain longevity

Over the past ten years, life expectancy in Germany has increased by 2 years and 3 months for newborn boys and 1.5 years for girls. As noted by «Russkaya Germaniya», the forecast results are a record for the Federal Republic of Germany.

The calculations by the Destatis agency are based on mortality data for 2012-2014. Experts are ready to indicate not only life expectancy for the country as a whole, but also to predict differences across federal states.

Thus, according to the statistics, the longest lives will be those born in Baden-Württemberg: men – on average 79 years and 5 months, women – almost 84 years. The lowest expectations in Germany are for men in Saxony-Anhalt, who will live 76 years and 2 months, and women in Saarland – the federal statistical office gives them an average of 82 years and 2 months. In Berlin, men will live up to 77.8 years, women up to 83 years; in Hamburg – up to 78.2 and 83 respectively; in Bavaria – up to 78.9 and 83.5; in the most populous state of Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia, the probable life expectancy is 77.8 years for men and 82.5 for women.

There is also good news from German statisticians for older people: life expectancy for those over 65 has also increased. The calculation is based on today's 65-year-olds. Destatis, based on an analysis of mortality data over the last three years, gives men an average of another 17 years and 8 months, and women almost 21 years. Ten years ago, 65-year-old men were expected to die 1 year and 5 months earlier, and 65-year-old women 1 year and 2 months earlier.

As of 2014, the residents of Germany lived on average to 78.1 years. About 40% of the 868,356 deaths were due to diseases of the cardiovascular system. The second most common cause of death is cancer, which claimed the lives of about a quarter of the deceased. In men, the organs most often affected by malignant tumors are the digestive and respiratory systems; in women, cancers of the digestive system and breast cancer are typical.
