Last year, Volkswagen produced more sausages than cars
As reported by the portal Vinegret.cz citing the daily Die Welt, Volkswagen has been producing sausages for 47 years. In the late 1990s, the company's chefs also created their own ketchup, which, according to them, perfectly harmonizes with the signature sausages.
Today, sausages are an essential item on the menu at all Volkswagen plants. They are also easily found in Wolfsburg's snack bars and supermarkets in 11 countries around the world.
This unusual combination for the automotive industry is linked to the company's history. When construction of the Volkswagen plant began in 1938, Wolfsburg was just a tiny settlement with a few hundred residents. The company needed to feed the thousands of workers involved in the construction. Thus, an independent meat shop appeared at the plant.
Interestingly, all sausage packages bear the mark VW Original Part, which translates as "original Volkswagen part." The product also has its own part number – 199 398 500 A. About 18,000 sausages are produced daily in the workshop. Thirty employees are involved in their preparation.
