Getting a child ready for school in the USA, where anything can be bought and sold, is a piece of cake. Numerous shopping centers have specialized departments for schoolchildren. As for the transportation component of going to school, a constant attribute of American schools is the school bus. True, the global financial crisis hit them as well. Since 2008, school buses in the USA only transport children living more than a mile (1610 meters) from the school building. In some states and districts, school buses have started operating only four times a week. Given the five-day school week, this means that on one of the days you will have to solve the problem of delivering your child to school yourself. So, if the distance to school is not too great, buy your child a children's bicycle or a teenager's one. Such a vehicle will also come in handy outside of school – during vacations, for example.
Visually, most public American schools (there are also numerous private schools) do not differ much from domestic schools, although they were built according to different designs. The same modest buildings, with delays in scheduled repairs, gray corridors, and children's slides in the yards. Schools in large cities look more presentable than schools in small towns, and those, in turn, look better than schools in rural areas. This is probably a general pattern for all countries with a large territory.
The main feature of the American school education system is the absence of federal standards. The school curriculum is formed at the state level. Elementary schools in the USA educate children aged five to eleven (or twelve) years. Most subjects are taught by one teacher who leads the class. The only exceptions to this rule are physical education, music, and fine arts.
Emphasis is placed on reading, writing, and arithmetic. Social studies are usually taught in the format of local history excursions. Education through entertainment plays a significant role – various creative competitions and the like.
